The Huge Epic Post-Christmas Weekly Update

by brandt

I didn’t think the holidays were going to be this busy.  I mean, it’s only Ashley, me, and our two dopey cats.  I figured that it would be one of the “lounging” Christmases that we’d had over the past couple of years.  I was wrong.

First, the cats have finally forgiven me.  I’ve been working from home this past week, and Ashley has had work off since Thursday (today was her first day back).  That means people are constantly coming and going, in and out of our apartment.  I’ve never seen them this tired at night.  Their cat napping has taken a big hiatus, and recently I’ve caught them finding some sort of sanctuary in their cat-carrier.  Poor cats.  Instead of getting their normal 16 hours of sleep per day, they’re down to about 12 hours of sleep.  I know, it breaks your heart.  The interesting thing about me working from home is how much they follow me.  We’ve got boxes upon boxes stacked up in the office in our apartment for that eventful day when my agent calls to tell us we finally have an accepted offer, and the cats love jumping up to the very top boxes and snoozing away while I’m crunching numbers.  Heaven forbid I actually shut the door.  I start seeing paws under the door, and the small “meows” grow larger and louder until it sounds like Jack Bauer is interrogating them in the hallway.  Nope.  They just want to come in and visit.

The Christmas Eve Random Friday Five!

by brandt

It’s Christmas time again!  As Ron Weasley said to Harry Potter in “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone,” “Happy Christmas, Harry!”  The Malone Compound inhabitants has been hard at work slaving over hot stoves getting cookies, cakes, and all sorts of sundry sugary items ready for mass consumption, as well as rocking out to some awesome Christmas songs (Um, Twisted Sister singing O Come All Ye Faithful, anyone?).  Anyways, enough with the holiday accolades, let’s get to the part everyone has been waiting for…

KITTEH FOR SANTA!

The Night the Brandt Stole Christmas

by brandt

Note: This story is 100% true, and literally happened last night at about 9:30/10:00 at night. It hasn’t been dolled up to make it more dramatic than it actually is. This is a story about why I’m a dork.

Some of you may be reading this wondering how I was able to screw up Christmas this year.  Some of you probably want to watch me squirm in uncomfortableness while I write this.  Some probably found this post based on Ashley’s Facebook status last night, which read:

Christmas is ruined

No matter the case, this is how the Brandt stole Christmas.

I have lots of random thoughts.  I’ve narrowed them down to five.  It’s Friday.  Let us begin.

Code word is “Santa’s got a brand new bag”.

by Ashley

Now that the holiday season is in full swing here in the Great Lakes State, Brandt has finally OK’ed listening to Christmas music in the car when we run our errands.  I love Christmas songs because they really set the mood for the holidays.  Yet there are some Christmas songs that I absolutely hate.  Take the song “The Christmas Shoes.” Call me heartless, but if a kid walks up to the checkout stand with some gold shoes and asks you to spot him because his mom is going to die soon? I don’t think so. I have no qualms helping people in need, but I take issue if a kid goes to the store, begging for random articles of clothing instead of food or warm clothes.  Another song I don’t care for either is “Grown up Christmas List.” While the song does mean well, it’s cliché and musically is horribly overproduced and underdelivered.

While the songs are a great part about Christmas, eventually the question comes down the goods.  The gifts.  One thing I find interesting about this season is more people ask what do you want for the Christmas, not so much what you are giving. This is the season giving, and people have more control on what they give instead of what they get.

Making A List, Checking it Twice

by brandt

Note: Because you all were SO NICE yesterday and gave us the most views we have EVER HAD for our website, I’m going to be extra nice and give you a 2 FOR 1 SPECIAL!!  That’s right, instead of anxiously waiting for the next time I decided to update the website, you will get two, TWO posts today instead of the normal one!  And it’s a NAVEL-GAZING EXTRAVAGANZA!  CHRISTMAS LISTS!  HUZZAH!  Of course, Ashley had to go and outdo me, but that’s what she’s best at.  So sit back and enjoy!  Ashley’s post will be up this afternoon!

I was a bit apprehensive around Thanksgiving this last year.  While we had a great time with much more friends than family at this year’s party, I knew the inevitable topic was going to come up with my uncles.

“So, Brandt, I need a Christmas list for you and Ashley.”

Ugh.

There’s Someplace Like Home For the Holidays

by brandt

I don’t think I”ll ever understand when the “newlywed” phase wears out.  I’ve heard lots of different timeframes: After you’ve been married 6 months, 1 year, 2 years, 3 years, 5 years, after you’ve had a child, after you’ve had your first major fight, after bodily functions are normal and encouraged, after weight becomes a non-issue (that one made me laugh), never (gag me).

I say that because now that Ashley and I have been married for 3.5 years, it feels like I’m learning things every day and there are days where I still feel like a newlywed, and days where it feels like we’re old folk married for a lifetime.  And then there are days when I wish future-Brandt would have left me a list of little things to remember, so that I could learn life’s little lessons a bit sooner.
